The newest fencing material and most expensive PVC (poly vinyl chloride) fencing provides great value for the investment. PVC fencing is virtually maintenance free and will maintain its “new” look through its entire life. Available in many styles and types, PVC fences can be “stockade like” styles, spaced picket styles, and even styles that look like ornamental iron.

In addition to fencing this material is now used in other areas of the home and yard such as GAZEBOS, patio decking, porch railings and arbors. The uses are growing as manufacturers continue their research and development.

There are a few drawbacks to PVC. The first is the initial cost, which can be as high as twice the cost of wood. This cost, however, when amortized over the life of the fence can really be lower than other materials as the PVC will last virtually forever. Another drawback is limited color options. White has been the only color available until recently. Most PVC styles now are available in a shade of tan or beige. Black is a new color available in 2002. Colors other than white cost about 15% more than white. Installations with vinyl material are often more difficult and sometimes not possible because the designs can not be altered to fit the layout of the yard or changes in the fall of the ground

PVC has made it greatest inroad for perimeter post and rail fencing. It can beautify the conventional field fence application and remove a maintenance problem associated with other types of fencing at a cost very close to that of pipe and cable and less than wood. Aluminum reinforcement of the PVC also adds the strength necessary for gates and handrails.
